1980 年9月10日第五屆全國人民代表大會第三次會議通過的《中華人民共和國婚姻法》第19條第二項提到：“非婚生子女的生父”，第20條第二項則提到了：“養子女和生父母”。對這兩個“生父”，人們的著眼點不同：前一個“生父”，是與有合法婚姻地位的父親相對而言的，從而這“生父”只是從生物學的觀點來看，才是非婚生子女的父親，故譯成英語宜做“biological father”或"natural father"，即事實上的生身之父而不是法律上合法婚姻的父親；后一個“生父”則是同“養父”相對而言的，如果說“養父”是“義父”即“假父”那么這種 “生父”才是親生的真父親，故譯成英語宜做“real father".
可見，婚姻法第20條第二項的“生父母”宜譯做“real parents".下列取自原著的例句為這種譯法提供了實踐根據：這”生父母“系同”adoptive parents“即”養父母“相對而言，乃法律用語，如果化為一般用語便是”親（生）父母“了。既然”親（生）父母“譯做"real parents"，則”親（生）女兒“，”親（生）子（女）“、”親（生）姊（妹）“當然也相應地譯做"real daughter"，”real child"和“real sister"了。請看下列三例所示：

回到本文的主旨，再明確一下：根據正確理解，非婚生子女的 “生父”乃“natural（或biological） father”而不做“real father”；養子女的“生父”以譯做"real father"為宜（沒有任何被誤解的可能），但亦不妨譯做"natural（或biological） father"（但有可能被誤解為養子女兼非婚生子女的生父）。同是一個“生父”，要識別其不同的詞義。
附帶追問一句：既有“natural father”，有沒有“natural moth— er”，又有沒有“natural person”呢？回答是：非婚生子女之生母，一般不叫“natural mother”而就（同婚生子女的生母一樣）叫“mother”，所以“natural mother”僅與“real mother”同義。至于“natural person”，在英語中是確有其詞的，意即“自然人”。你我都是自然人而不是機器人；中國對外翻譯出版公司卻既非機器人，又非自然人，但仍不失其為人即 person.什么人呢？——“artificial（人為的）person”即“法入”是也。
